The Association of Pakistani Physicians and Surgeons of the United Kingdom (APPS UK) hosted a winter fundraising dinner on Saturday 8th December 2012. We had around 700 guests and raised nearly £50,000. Chairs of different UK based Medical College Alumni bodies attended this dinner including King Edward Medical University, Khyber Medical College, Alama Iqbal Medical College, Rawalpindi Medical College and Quaid-e-Azam Medical College.
Mrs Rifat Saleem, Founder and Chair of Zanfha Charitable Trust presented a cheque of £10,000 to APPS UK. Dr Mohammed Iqbal, Chair of APPS UK in his keynote speech said: “We want to pay back to Pakistan but it feels that our offers are not valued by the administrations in Pakistan. We want to send machinery to Pakistan but the government is asking us for as much as 300 percent tax. We want to build centres of excellence in Pakistani cities but the government has to facilitate us.” APPS Kids Club vowed the audience with their song 'Dil Dil Pakistan'. APPS held its Summer Gala Dinner in Manchester on June 16th. It was attended by almost 1000 members and their families. Special guests included Pakistan High Commissioner, the renowned plastic surgeon Mr Jawad featuring in the Oscar winning documentary 'Saving Face' and Suniya Qureshi (Executive Director of British Pakistan Foundation). Entertainment was provided by Todd Shea, George Ka Pakista, Aves Mohammed (Artist and Poet), Emil Khan (Sarangi player), Shaista Aziz (Comedian) and Scott Charlton (Auctioneer). APPS still has 4 vacant Executive Member positions, one in each of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Quetta and Peshawar. If you are an enthusiastic doctor based in any of the above areas, who cares about the society and would like to make a real difference to the lives of others then we would love to hear from you.

APPS Trustees hosted an Iftar Dinner on Saturday 21st August. This was attended by over 70 guests with representatives from Hep C Trust, Nishtar Medical College Alumni Association, Punjab Medical College Old Student Association, Pakistan Thalasaemia Society, Mobile Plasmapheresis Project and the Liver Foundation. Following a delicious Iftar meal, Haris Ifraz, the helicopter flight winner was presented his prize and short presentations were made by the guests from Pakistan regarding their current projects.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY: As we celebrate this day, let us also reflect back and see what went wrong. May this be the year of change we so desperately need to improve the lives of ordinary, hard working and sincere Pakistanis.
