APPS Child Protection Project
Child Protection Project is a dream to rehabilitate garbage collecting children in the streets of Pakistan to normal childhood.
The final objective of the project is for the child to be facilitated into something for which he has passion and aptitude. If a child is keen to proceed to formal education he is supported to the local school, if a child is interested in some other vocation then he is helped into that. However, the child is strongly encouraged to carry on attending CPC and its activities every day with the aim to nurture strong bonding and mutual trust between the child and the CPC and carry on building his personality.
Child Protection Project is a dream to rehabilitate garbage collecting children in the streets of Pakistan to normal childhood through Child Protection Centers (CPCs).
This is a novel idea of exposing these children to the environment of a normal child of the middle class of the society, no matter how briefly but it should be regularly, while they are cared for in the CPCs on daily basis.
We aim to replicate this programme in the other major cities of Pakistan Insha’Allah and be a model for others to follow. May Allah be our Helper. Amin!
These children are identified on garbage dump sites and in the streets. Their parents are located and the whole project discussed with the parents and the child. Once agreed upon, the child starts attending the Child Protection Center (CPC) every day for two to three hours. In CPC child is taught basic ethics and morality in the form of stories, allowed to play with other children in the CPC and provided with meals. During this period children also learn about basic social skills, basic hygiene, basic literacy and numeracy, different indoor and outdoor games and team work.
Prior to joining the CPC these children have a full medical check including blood tests for AIDS Virus and Hepatitis B & C Viruses. They are provided with a clean pair of clothes for home and a pair of CPC uniform along with shoes, socks and jumpers for the winters. They also receive a brief lesson in basic hygiene and a hygiene kit is supplied to each child along with a school bag.
Twice a week the children are taken to a dedicated multi media centre where they learn about the world through videos on different subjects. They also watch other programmes with a mixture of entertainment and educational material. The aim is to develop their awareness about the world in general.
Once a month these children are taken on a day trip to an amusement park or some other recreational activity outside CPC. They enjoy themselves by going on the rides in the park or playing games of football, cricket, etc. Hot meal is provided outdoor during these trips.
In order to further improve their social skills and enhance their self esteem these children are treated to a lunch in a good local restaurant three times a year. These lunches are attended by all the CPC staff and either an overseas visiting sponsor or a local dignitary are also in attendance. Children socialize among themselves and the other guests.
CPC staff holds quarterly meetings with the parents and the local community of these children through community awareness programme. In these meetings issues of the children and the parents along with the community are discussed and solutions are looked into.
